Waterton Glacier Trails

Animals on both sides of the border come out of winter hopefully in good health as they begin to enjoy the summer months.  This is the time for viewing the new born wildlife and also to be very careful while driving and viewing to avoid any mishaps for both you and the animals.

Hiking Calendar for the 2024 Season

In some years snow clings to the mountains forcing the hikers to stay to the lower trails, even as late as the beginning of August.  Be sure to check trail conditions before heading out.

Hiking in the high country in both Waterton and Glacier parks gives spectacular views.  Early in the season - June through late July will provide fabulous floral displays with bloom extending to the tops of mountains.

September hiking gives the amazing fall colours and trails that are slightly less crowded.  For those who fish, the fish are all aware that winter is coming and they all want to get out of the water.  Fishing tends to be spectacular.

For most people, August provides the most acceptable hiking experience.  The weather is hot, the trails are in excellent shape and it is arguably the safest time to enjoy all the mountains have to offer.  The trails will be busy at this time and it will be necessary for you to  research and prepare for any possible problems.  Check with the rangers and at the trail head and heed the warnings.

Prime Hiking Time:  Trails Tend to be Packed

September Promises Wonderful Hiking With Fall Colours and Cooler Temperatures.

July is a month of transition for hikers.  The high country is still snow bound with steep snowbanks to cross and special equipment and skill is required to safely cross these areas.  The lower trails are generally lined with beautiful flowers providing for a great hiking experience.
